Kuweit: Concert closed for ‘defying the conservative traditions’
The Kuwaiti department for monitoring public entertainment abrubtly ended a concert by the Egyptian singer Tamer Hosni because of a kiss, reported The Associated Press
A woman from the audience jumped onto the stage, hugged the Egyptian singer Tamer Hosni and gave him a kiss. For this, authorities abruptly had to make an end to his performance.
The concert was broadcasted live by the Al-Rai TV satellite channel, and after 30 minutes the organisers allegedly received a phone call from the Kuweiti Ministry of Information to cancel the concert. The Egyptian singer had performed only three songs.
Member of Parliament Mohammad Hayef Al-Mutairi said the scene damaged the reputation of Kuwait. He added the ministers of Interior, Information and Commerce and Industry must take firm action and refer the violators of the rules and regulations to the Public Prosecution.
Qanas al-Adwani, head of the government department that monitors public entertainment, lateron told The Associated Press that the girl's behaviour “defied the conservative traditions” of Kuwait and were in disregard for the strict public entertainment licences that concerts must obtain.
Concerts have to be licensed by the government, and monitors from the Information Ministry watch the crowd to make sure nobody breaks the strict code that bans standing up and dancing.
These regulations were imposed by influential Muslim fundamentalists after they failed in 1997 to ban concerts altogether.
