Concert banned because of presence of women musicians |

Iranian authorities have cancelled a concert of traditional Iranian singer Homayoun Shajarian because two members of the band are women, the ISNA news agency reported.
Homayoun Shajarian is the son of Mohammad Reza Shajarian – a legendary singer in Iran. Homayou has performed with his ensemble in several cities in Iran, but the concert scheduled to take place in the western city of Tabriz was banned by the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry of East Azerbaijan province.
According to the Iranian Students News Agency, ISNA, and several international news agencies, the main reason for banning the concert was that two members of Homayoun Shajarian’s ensemble, a kamanche and an oud player, are women. Also, the fact that the concert was sold out was mentioned as a safety hazard.
In Iran solo female singing has been banned since 1979 but there has not been restrictions on female musicians performing in public concerts until now.
An official of the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry have be quoted as saying that "We have our own rules and we ensure that they are followed."
